Hot hot Megeve

Snowgenius is in Megeve for the weekend, and it is hot!  It’s 15 deg C in the town, and even on the mountain it doesn’t get much below 10 deg C.

But don’t despair, the skiing is still actually quite good.  They’ve done a good job of looking after the pistes, but you need to choose where to ski.  Cote 2000 is where the best snow is to be found,  so if you’re skiing get get yourself over there and don’t come back to the main Megeve side until the end of the day.

Be warned though, it is easy to get stuck on that side of the mountain at the end of the day, so start your return journey with plenty of time to spare if you want to return to the centre of Megeve.

Ski touring in Lyngen, Norway

As the skiing season starts to wind down the ski touring season is just getting going, and snowgenius has a trip lined up in Lyngen.

Lyngen is well into the Arctic Circle, and as we’re going in the first week of May we’ll be there as Lyngen becomes bathed in 24hr sunlight!  Of course this means that we won’t be able to see the Northern Lights, but on the plus side there’s plenty of scope for midnight summiting.

There are two ways that people tend to approach ski touring in the Lyngen Alps.  We’re opting to hire an apartment from which to embark on a series of day tours. The other, flashier, route is to charter a boat which takes your party from fjord to fjord overnight, leaving you to ski tour a different area every day.

We’re very excited about the trip and hope that snow conditions continue to be good.

We’ll keep you posted with developments as we go along, as well as more information about the area and how best to go about organising your own expedition to the area in case you want to follow in our ski tracks…

Skiing in Utah

Snowgenius is in Utah! We’ve been having a great trip sampling the ski resorts in the Wasatch Range – so far, we’ve clocked up Snowbird, Alta, Solitude and Deer Valley, and we’ve just moved to Park City where we’ve got 3 more days of skiing. We’ve been very lucky with the conditions – we arrived to several feet of new snow last weekend, and more has fallen during the week. In particular, yesterday was a perfect bluebird day in Alta, with a foot of fresh, light Utah powder – unbeatable. Reports on all the resorts we’ve skied, plus some further gear reviews coming soon!

Snow arrives for the West of USA

After an epic time last season, much of the west of the USA has had a terrible start to the 2011/2012 season, with an exceptionally dry December and (so far) January leading to a snowpack less than half the average depth for this time of year. To add insult to the injury, at the same time the Alps have been getting record breaking levels of snow, with some resorts having received more snow in one week than they did for the whole of last season.

BUT – things are changing! The storm track for North America has shifted south, and the conditions have finally come together with a ton of moisture coming off the Pacific and hitting the mountains. Starting today, the forecasts are now calling for 30 – 60 inches of snow by the weekend – that’s 75 – 150cm in new money! see here for more details.

Snowgenius is particularly excited, as we’re heading out to ski in Utah on Saturday 21January – hopefully right into the best of the powder. We’ll be updating the blog from out there, so watch this space!

Morzine – Let It Rain, Let It Rain, Let it Rain!

snowgenius is in Morzine for some New Year skiing, hoping to capitalise on some of the tremendous snow that Europe has been receiving.  Unfortunately whilst the snow last week was reportedly excellent, by the time we arrived on the 31st December the temperatures were above freezing and any precipitation was falling as rain.  Yesterday there was light rain in the morning, but blue skies in the afternoon.  The snow condition was still excellent after the heavy falls from the week before, although the rain was making the conditions similar to spring snow – soft and slushy.  With the sun out the skiing was great – nearly all the runs are open, right down to the resort base, and the snow base is deep enough to cope with the rain that had fallen.  Off piste is a different story as the uncompacted snow was affected more by the wet, making conditions inconsistent and challenging.

Today we skied in Les Gets, and in the morning it was raining hard, making conditions very unpleasant.  Only the hardiest and most determined skiers (usually British families) were braving the conditions!  With morning temperatures around 3 degrees above freezing in the village, we headed higher to try to escape the rain, but it wasn’t until around 1600m (two chair-lifts worth of climbing) that the temperature was low enough for snow to be falling.  And it was falling hard, with the limited visibility causing the closure of some of the highest lifts.  After lunch, the temperature dropped to freezing in the valley and the rain turned to heavy flakes of snow.  The forecast is for temperatures to drop over the course of the week, so the precipitation forecast should fall in the form of snow.  Here’s hoping.

If you’re coming to the area we recommend you choose a high resort, and preferably stay mobile to chase the better conditions.  If you’re coming by car, make sure you have winter tyres or snow chains – the conditions are quickly changeable at the moment.

Happy skiing, and Happy New Year from all of us at snowgenius.

Winter Park update…

So finally it snowed here in Winter Park!  Up on the hill it snowed all through the day yesterday, and carried on into the night.  Sadly it wasn’t several feet of phat powder, but the three inches that fell made a real difference to the quality of the pistes.  Several new runs have been opened as a result (including the wonderfully named Tweedle Dee), and rumour has it that Mary Jane will be opened tomorrow for the first time this season.  Here’s hoping…

Winter Park update…

The good news is that there is snow.  The bad news is that much of it is man made, and there isn’t enough of it.  The only part of the mountain open is Winter Park itself.  Mary Jane, Parsenn Bowl, Vasquez Cirque and Vasquez Ridge are all closed for lack of the white stuff.  This sounds pretty disastrous, but actually the resort has done a great job of making the most of the conditions, and the runs that are open are actually very skiable, with well maintained hard packed piste.  If you enjoy blasting around wide and well maintained pistes you’re well catered for.  If you want off piste powder and tree skiing I’m afraid you’ll be disappointed.  However, as one of my lift companions said on Saturday, a bad day’s skiing is better than a good day in the office.  The sky is blue, the sun’s out, the pistes are empty, even by Winter Park’s standards – you just have to ski the conditions.  Carvers it is!

It seems the whole region has had a slow start to the snowy season due to the lingering presence of a high pressure weather system, so there aren’t any nearby resorts with vastly different conditions.  That said, apparently Loveland has slightly better snow, and Breckenridge and Steamboat also seem to be doing mildly better.  I went to Steamboat yesterday, and whilst the quality of their snow is only slightly better, they do have more runs and lifts open than Winter Park, and their snow-making facilities seem to extend further up the mountain than Winter Park’s.

Some sources are forecasting light snow in the middle of the week, but this may be little more than wishful thinking.  Nonetheless, I have my fingers firmly crossed!

If you’re going to Colorado…

…and need a transfer to/from Denver airport, I’ve used Homes James a few times and they’ve always been very reliable and helpful. Essentially it’s a shuttle bus service which ferries customers in minibuses direct to their hotel from Denver airport. The downside is that if you happen to be the last destination on the bus then you end up going all over the place before you get to your stop, but it is the cheapest way to get to the resort!
